The Stadium Consultancy is the appointed specialist consultant and project manager for the redevelopment of the AFAS Stadium, home of Dutch Premier League club AZ Alkmaar.
Whilst AZ were already developing a new strategy for upgrading the AFAS Stadium and redeveloping the stadium site with commercial functions, the roof collapse on 10 August 2019 speeded up this process.
Immediately after the roof incident, The Stadium Consultancy were appointed as project managers to coordinate the investigations into the causes of the collapse and to assess the structural soundness of the entire stadium, so that the authorities would allow AZ to play matches again in their stadium.
In this role The Stadium Consultancy was responsible for coordinating the structural studies executed by RoyalHaskoningDHV, SGS Intron & RWDI, the licensing process with the local Municipality, the activities of the insurance specialists and the demolition works. As a major risk mitigation measure, the club decided at an early stage that it would demolish the remaining parts of the roof as well. As a result the stadium opened again to the public on 13 December 2019 with a 1-0 victory over Ajax.
Parallel to the above processes to open up the stadium again, The Stadium Consultancy are also the client representative for the design and construction team for the new roof design on behalf of AZ. The new roof structure, designed by Zwarts&Jansma Architects (ZJA) with RoyalHaskoningDHV for the structural engineering, consists of so called ‘cranes’ on three sides of the stadium. The main stand is spanned by a truss with its highest point of 40m above pitch level. Royal BAM Group is contracted and responsible for the definitive design and construction of the new roofing. The execution of the works started on 01 June 2020.
