Job done: new roof construction AFAS Stadium

on 27/09/2021

Two years after the roof collapse, the AFAS Stadium re-opened on 11 September 2021 with the first Eredivisie match of the season at home against PSV Eindhoven.

The Stadium Consultancy acted as client project managers on behalf of AZ Alkmaar. Our scope included the coordination and managing of all inquiries and studies after the cause of the roof collapse, the demolition works & process of reopening of the stadium and the design & construction works of the new roof.

As part of the project the stadium capacity has been increased from 17.000 to 20.000 seats. With the new roofline extending more than 4 meters beyond the old roof line the comfort and protection against the elements of all spectators has been set as a priority. To further enhance the fan experience a new LED Floodlighting system supplied by Musco and a new PA and entertainment system supplied by Bose have been installed.

In the following ESPN documentary (https://www.az.nl/nl/nieuws/az-tv-special-afas-stadion) AZ Managing Director Robert Eenhoorn, AZ Stadium Manager Ron Homan and Ben Veenbrink, Managing Director The Stadium Consultancy, look back at the period of reconstruction during the previous 2 years.
